What Is True Prayer?

According to A Course in Miracles and The Song of Prayer, true prayer is not about asking for things — not even for good things. It’s not about trying to change the world or even our personal experience.

“Prayer is a way of remembering your holiness.”
— The Song of Prayer, S-1.I.5:1

True prayer is a communication of the heart — a silent, still, wordless desire to be in union with God, with Love, with Peace.
It is a joining, not a petition.

When we ask for specific outcomes, even if they seem noble (healing, safety, peace in the world), we are affirming that something is lacking — that we are not whole now. That kind of prayer may seem humble, but it actually reinforces the ego’s thought system of lack, separation, and need.

True prayer, on the other hand, asks for nothing but the experience of God — because in that experience, all else is known to be already given.

What Then Is the Function of True Prayer?

  • It aligns your desire with what is real and eternal.
  • It brings you to the quiet center of your being.
  • It becomes a bridge back to the awareness of Love’s Presence.
  • It reveals that the only thing we ever truly wanted… was God.

In this way, desire and prayer are the same thing.

The Course says we are always praying — every thought, every focus, every desire is a prayer.
The question is: What are we praying for?

How Do You Find the True Prayer of Your Heart?

Here’s where the Levels of Mind and the “Choosing Peace” meditation come in beautifully.

We can use them to peel away the layers that cover our true desire:

🌀 Step 1: Start with the Trigger or Surface Thought
Begin with something bothering you — something you think you want or don’t want.
Maybe it’s: “I want her to understand me.”
Or: “I hope I get this job.”

Pause. Now breathe. And ask:

🧠 Step 2: Go Deeper — What Thought is Behind That?
Behind “I want her to understand me” might be:
“I feel unseen. I feel alone. I’m afraid I don’t matter.”

Trace this to the emotion, the thought, the belief, and eventually…

🔥 Step 3: Reach the Core Desire

Ask gently:
What do I really want underneath all this? How would I feel if I got it.
It might be:

  • To be at peace
  • To feel loved
  • To know I am safe
  • To feel awake and alive

These are not things of the world. They are qualities of spirit.
They are echoes of our true prayer — our desire to return to Love, to God.

🌺 And Then… Choose Your Prayer
Let yourself name the feeling you want — not the situation, not the form.

Say quietly in your heart:
“I want peace.”
“I want to feel God’s Love.”
“I want to remember who I really am.”

This is your true prayer.
No words are really needed — just the intention.
And the Holy Spirit answers immediately, not by changing the world,
but by changing your mind — and thus your experience.

🧘‍♀️ Meditation as a Way to Access Prayer
The Choosing Peace meditation is actually a pathway to prayer.
It calms the surface waves so we can sink into the deep current of the heart.

Every time you:

  • Pause and breathe
  • Sort your thoughts
  • Let go of the ego’s chatter
  • And choose again for peace…

You are praying.
Not asking.
Just remembering.
